Casting Out The Demons

Opening Act

Scene opens at the Ross home, interior, night time. Carol Ross is pacing through the living room with her arms folded across her chest. Her expression is worried. She walks over to the window and pulls the drapes back to peer out to the street. She frowns, and closes the drapes, stepping away from the window. She looks quickly at the clock and sighs.

Tatiana (suddenly beside her):
Is something wrong, Mama?

Carol (smiles down at her):
Oh, no, Sweetie. Nothing's wrong at all.

Tatiana:
Why were you looking out the window?

Carol:
I just wanted to see what was out there.

Tatiana:
Oh...OK!

She scampers away quickly and Carol lets out a long sigh. She goes over to the phone and quickly begins to punch a number.

Cut to Mark Greene's apartment. Mark is on the sofa with Nina Pomerantz, locked in a caring embrace and a kiss, which is shattered by the ringing of the phone.

Nina (kissing him):
Let the answering machine get it.

Mark (nods):
Good idea.

Mark's voice (on machine):
Hi, I'm not home right now...please leave a message so I can get back with you as soon as possible.

Carol's voice (on machine):
Mark, it's Carol...if you're home, please pick up. It's important.

Mark (sighs):
I better pick it up...
(reaches over and picks up receiver)
Hi, Carol...what's wrong?

Carol:
Oh, good! You ARE there! Is Doug with you, by any chance?

Mark:
No, he's not.

Carol:
Well, have you seen him this evening at all?

Mark (pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration):
No, why? Is he missing?

Carol:
Well, he's been gone quite a while and it's getting close to time for him to hook up for dialysis...I was just getting a little worried.

Mark:
I'm sure he knows what time it is, doesn't he?

Carol:
I'm sure he does. He's just been acting strange lately, Mark. I'm worried about him.

Mark:
Acting strange? How?

Carol:
Oh, just little things. Mostly that his thoughts are out in left field and his attention span is short. Something must be bothering him that he can't share with me yet. Do you have any idea where he might be?

Mark (sighs):
Do you want me to go look for him?

Carol:
Not unless you know where to look.

Mark:
I have some ideas, yeah. Don't worry, Carol. It'll be OK.

Carol:
Thanks, Mark. I owe you.

Mark (sarcastic grin, looks over at Nina):
Not you, but, Doug...and more than he knows right now! I'll get back to you, Carol. Don't worry.

Mark hangs up the phone and sighs heavily, giving Nina a sheepish look.

Nina:
Something's wrong?

Mark:
Doug isn't home...it's getting close to time for him to start his dialysis and Carol is worried about him. She says he's been acting strange lately. I know he's been seeing you...is he in any danger?

Nina:
No, I don't think so. He's having some problems with some things, but, nothing serious.

Mark:
Well, I promised her I'd look for him. Will you be gone when I get back?

Nina:
Probably. I have an early appointment in the morning.

Mark (sighs, nods, stands up to leave):
OK. I'm really sorry about this.

Nina:
Sorry? That you are a loyal and dedicated friend? Don't ever be sorry about that!
(stands up, wraps he arms around him, and kisses him)
That's one of the things I love most about you.
(Mark chuckles)
If you need me when you find me, just page me.

Mark:
I can handle Doug.

Nina:
Yeah, I guess you've been handling him for a long time, haven't you? I think it's so good that he respects you enough to let you control him.
(Mark chuckles)
Good luck.

Mark (takes his jacket and walks her to the door):
Thanks...I'll probably need it.

Show Mark driving through Chicago, stopping various places he thinks Doug might be...the office...the gym...a couple of different restaurants...but no avail. He is driving along and sees a bar he knows Doug used to frequent and sighs. He parks the car and goes in to look around but can't make out much for all the people. He walks over to the bar and taps the shoulder of the bartender.

Bartender:
What'll be, pal?

Mark:
Oh, nothing to drink...I'm looking for someone...do you know a Dr. Doug Ross?

Bartender (smiles, and nods):
Oh, yeah! He used to come in here all the time!

Mark:
Well, have you seen him tonight?

Bartender:
Nope...sure haven't. He hasn't been in here in a long, LONG time.

Mark (nods):
OK...thanks.

Mark goes on back out to his car with a sigh and a long look. Just as he is about to get in, he sees John Carter walking down the street, heading towards the hospital, which is nearby.

Mark (calling out):
John!
(getting no response, he calls a little louder and starts walking in his direction)
Hey! Dr. Carter!

At the sound of "Dr. Carter", John stops and turns around. When he sees Mark coming towards him, he smiles, and waits.

Mark (reaching John on the sidewalk):
Are you going to work?

Carter (nods):
Yeah...I'm on all night.

Mark (chuckles):
I can't tell you how much I don't miss those! So, you wouldn't know if Doug was at the hospital or had been there at any time tonight, huh?

Carter (shakes his head):
No, I sure wouldn't. Why? Is he missing?

Mark:
Oh, it's getting close to time for him to do dialysis and he's not home yet. Carol is getting a little concerned. That's all.

Carter:
Well, Dr. Ross is very responsible about his health. I'm sure he won't miss his hook up time.

Mark:
Well, Carol was just concerned. I was trying to find him. I've looked everyplace I can think of...

Carter:
Did you try the Church?

Mark:
The Church?
(shakes his head)
No, I didn't try there. Why? You think he might be there?

Carter (shrugs):
I just know that when he's thinking about something or has a lot on his mind, he goes there sometimes. It might be worth a try.

Mark (nods):
Yeah, OK...I'll try that...which Church?

Carter:
He goes to St. Michael's Parish...it's about three blocks that way...
(points)
Only the doors facing the rectory are unlocked at night.

Mark:
OK, thanks, John! Have a good evening!

Carter (chuckles):
You know I will!

Mark turns and jogs back to his car...Carter stands and watches until he is gone, then proceeds his journey back to the hospital.

Focus on Carter walking away and fade into the Opening Credit of the show.

Act One

Scene opens back at the Ross home. Carol is sitting on the sofa, looking out the window, watching for Doug. She turns her attention back to Scott and Tatiana, who are watching television in the next room.

Carol:
Hey, Tatch! It's time for bed!

Tatiana:
I can't go to bed yet, Mama!

Carol:
And just why can't you, young lady?

Tatiana:
Because Papa's not here to play Candy Land with me!

Carol:
It's time for bed, so off you go! I'll play Candy Land with you.

Tatiana (smiles wide...jumps up):
OK!

Carol (as she starts out of the room):
One more hour, Scott...then up to bed, OK?

Scott (nods):
Yes, Ma'am.

Carol takes Tatiana by the hand and they start up the steps together. As she walks by, focus on the time on the clock and flash to Carol's concerned glance at it.

Cut to show Mark stopping his car in front of a Church. Street lights shed quite a bit of light on the walk ways around it. Mark starts up the walk and he sees a light on in the Rectory across the way. He remembers Carter's words and heads for the doors facing the Rectory. He tries one door and it is locked, so he reaches for the other door and pulls it open. He walks slowly into the Sanctuary and looks around. In the dim light, he sees Doug sitting alone in a pew very close to the Crucifix at the alter. Mark goes slowly down the aisle to stop in front of him. Reaching him, he sees that Doug has Rosary beads in his hand. He does not interrupt him and slides in beside him, waiting for him to stop.

Doug (quietly):
What are you doing here, Mark?

Mark:
Looking for you.

Doug (chuckles lightly):
Carol call you?

Mark:
Yes, she did.

Doug:
I wasn't going to miss my hook up time. I've got plenty of time.

Mark:
She was just concerned.
(pause)
Everything OK?

Doug:
Sure...why?

Mark:
Usually when somebody comes to Church, something's bothering them.

Doug:
Just needed some peace and quiet. This is the best place to get it.

Mark:
I'm listening if you want to bend my ear.

Doug:
I love my family, Mark. Don't get me wrong. They are the greatest joy in the world to me. But, sometimes, I need to get away from the kids yelling, and the TV blaring, and the baby crying...

Mark (chuckles):
I hear you, Bud. I used to be that way and I only had one kid!

Doug:
Well, when I feel that way, I come here. I come here rather than maybe pull a 'Ray'...does that make sense?

Mark:
In other words, you come here to get control of yourself before you go back to them?

Doug (nods):
Yeah...is that corny?

Mark (smiles, shakes his head):
No...I think it's admirable.
(Doug chuckles and gives Mark a wry smile)
Well, now that I know you're OK, I'll let you get back to your prayer...

Doug (stands up with Mark):
I wasn't really saying the whole Rosary...I don't know what Mysteries to use today!
(Chuckles)
Guess I'm not the best Catholic in the world, huh?

Mark (as they start out):
Well, at least you try. That's more than I do with mine.

They step into the aisle and Doug turns to the Crucifix and makes the sign of the Cross on his chest while dropping to one knee in a genuflect. Then, he turns and walks up the aisle with Mark. As they start out the door, he quickly dips two fingers into the Holy Water font, and makes the sign of the cross again on his way out the door.

Mark (once they are outside):
My car is over there...did you drive?

Doug:
No, I walked.

Mark:
Do you want to walk back? Or can I drive you?

Doug:
You better drive me...I'm cutting the time pretty close!

He goes with Mark and climbs into the passenger's side. Mark gets in on the driver's side and slams the door. He starts the engine and drives them away slowly.

Cut to show Carol opening the door back at the Ross home for Doug as he comes up the walk. She waves to Mark as he pulls away and Doug comes into the house.

Carol (concerned):
Are you OK?

Doug (kisses her cheek and smiles):
I'm fine.

Carol:
Where were you?

Doug:
Just someplace thinking.

Carol:
Are you OK?

Doug (starts up the steps):
I'm fine...but I need to get upstairs and start getting hooked up.

Carol (follows him up):
Doug, are you OK?

Doug (turns to her and smiles):
I'm fine.

Carol:
Well, you've been acting really distant lately. Is everything OK?

Doug (stops on the steps, and turns to her, takes her by the shoulders):
Everything's fine...there are just some times when I need a little time to myself and that's all tonight was about, OK?

Carol:
Doug, you'd tell me if something was wrong, wouldn't you?

Doug:
Yes, I would. You worry too much.

He turns and goes on up the steps. Carol follows along behind him. He stops first in the nursery and looks in on Marc. The baby is sleeping with his fist close to his mouth. Doug smiles, and pats his son's bottom gently before he leaves the room and closes the door. He stops next at Tatiana's room and looks in on her. She is not asleep and smiles and waves at him when she sees him. He smiles and points a warning finger at her, and mouths 'go to sleep' at her, closing the door with a chuckle.

Doug:
Did you play Candy Land with her?

Carol (snickers):
She wouldn't go to bed until I did!

Doug:
Scotty upstairs already?
(Carol nods)
I'll just check on him...

Carol:
I'll go turn the machine on and get all your things out.

Doug (nods):
OK...thanks!
He goes up the steps to Scott's attic room and looks in on him. Scott is in bed, but, not asleep, and reading a comic book by the light.

Doug (softly):
Hey, Bud...not too late, OK?

Scott (looks up and smiles):
OK, Dad! As soon as I finish this, OK?

Doug:
OK, Bud. Good night.

Scott:
Good night, Dad!

Doug goes on back down the steps and into the master bedroom. Carol is putting a blue clamp on a bag of clear fluid and then she puts it on the table beside the machine.

Carol:
I think it's amazing how this thing works...I couldn't believe it draws the Dianeal out of the spare bag and into the bag on the heater to warm it.

Doug (chuckles, pulls his shirt off):
Yeah, that's pretty neat, isn't it?
(he pulls into a t-shirt and kicks off his jeans before crawling into bed, taking several work files with him) I think the whole thing is pretty amazing, truthfully.

Carol:
Do you want me to hook you up?

Doug (punches button on the machine):
No, thanks, Hon. I can handle it.
(he grins at her)
Unless you just want to do it.

Carol (takes the clear cassette base out of his hand to put it in the machine herself):
Sometimes I miss being a nurse, you know?

Doug (chuckles):
I bet you do. When we left County it was a big change for you. Are you ever sorry?

Carol:
No...not really. I love having more time for you and the kids. And now...
(pats her belly)
...it's probably for the best.

Doug:
You really gave up more than I did when we changed courses.

Carol (still working at the machine...we hear various instructional 'beeps' from it):
I don't mind. Really. I'm very happy where we are now.
(stands up)
There you go! All connected!
(she pushes one last button)
I'm going downstairs for a while...do you need anything?

Doug:
Nope...I'm fine! I may be asleep when you come back...I'm really bushed tonight.

Carol (leans over and kisses him):
OK...if you are...good night!

She goes on out of the room and Doug starts going through his files he has. But, he doesn't look at them long before he tosses them aside and slides down in bed to relax.

Cut to show time lapse. The room is dark now except for the glow of light from the control panels of the dialysis machine. Doug and Carol are in bed together, each on their side facing each other, and asleep. At least, Carol is asleep. Zoom in close to focus on Doug. He is sleeping, but, his sleep is troubled. Distort the picture to show us going into this dream.

Dream Sequence

Show Doug walking along alone in a thick fog. Show the white fog swirling around his feet and making his viability very poor. He is going slowly, with his hand extended to feel his way forward. Show him walk into a clearing and the fog is gone. Ahead of him he sees the parking garage near the hospital. He sees himself walking through the garage, heading for his car parked nearby. He sees a man approach him...

Man (distorted voice...very slow):
Hey, Buddy...got a light?

He turns in the direction of this voice to respond, but, when he turns around, there is no one there. The fog is back. And he is alone again. But he keeps hearing the request of "Hey, Buddy, Got A Light?" over and over in his head, louder and louder until he puts both hands over his ears to block it out. He turns around again and sees the person this time, but they are sketchy and lost in the fog. He starts walking towards the person to get a better few, but, the fog just keeps swirling around him.

Man's Voice:
Dougie? What are you boy? Come to me!
Doug turns sharply at the sound of this voice. straining in the fog to see but he can't see anyone.

Man's Voice:
Dougie? You should have told me, Dougie. You should have told me...

Doug turns circles trying to locate the voice but he can't get through the fog. He can hear a child crying but he can't see where anything is. Suddenly, the fog clears and he sees someone standing in the clearing with his back to him. He starts walking slowly towards this person. He gets to the person and puts his hand on their shoulder to turn them around. He sees this person turn around, but, the viewing audience does not.

Voice (off camera):
Yeah, Doug! It was me! It was me all along...

Focus on Doug's frightened expression and show him backing up trying to get away...

End of Dream Sequence

Show Doug sitting up quickly in his bed, breathing hard, and sweating. He puts his hand to his chest and tries to recover. Show Carol rousing awake and sitting up with him. She rubs his shoulders gently and pulls herself close to him.

Carol:
What's wrong?

Doug (eases back down in the bed):
Bad dream.

Carol:
You want to tell me about it?

Doug (shakes his head slowly):
I don't remember it. It just woke me up.

Carol:
I thought you were all over that.

Doug:
I did too...but I guess I'm not.

Carol:
Is that what you're talking to Nina about?

Doug:
One of the things...yeah.

Carol:
One of the things?
(lays down with him)

Doug:
Yeah...there are other things I'm bothered by right now.

Carol:
And you're hooked up to one of them, right?

Doug (looks over at the machine):
Most of the time it doesn't bother me...but sometimes...if I think about it...it gets me down.

Carol:
I can understand that. You had a lot of adjustments to make in a very short period of time.

Doug:
Something else is bothering me...
(he looks sheepishly over at her)
...Greg Powell.
(Carol rolls her eyes)
I did talk to him about not showing up last Wednesday.

Carol:
I talked to him about that too...I don't think it will happen again.

Doug:
He lied to me, though. He told me his mother was ill. I thought his mother died when he was young?

Carol:
It's a step-mother. He just needed an excuse.

Doug:
Something about this guy just really bugs me...and it has nothing to do with you. If I ever figure out what it is, I'll let you know.

Carol:
Greg is not a bad guy. Not really. He's a hard worker and he's very serious about his job. I think we both just need to get past our personal problems with him to see those things.

Doug (chuckles):
Yeah.

Carol:
Come on, Hon...it's really late. Think you can go back to sleep now?

Doug (nods):
Yeah...I think so.

Carol (cuddles him close to her):
OK...let's try, OK?

Doug relaxes his her arms and lets her baby him. He closes his eyes and tries to drift off to sleep, but everytime he closes them, they snap back open. Show him staring off into the dark and let him hear a voice telling him…

Voice:
Your demons will haunt you for the rest of your life because you don't have the power to snuff them out!

He closes his eyes and sighs heavily, closing his eyes tighter trying to block everything out.

Fade Act One to Black.

Act Two

Scene opens at Family Center...exterior...morning. Show Doug walking across the parking lot alone, head down, hands in his pockets. Just about the time he gets to the back door, show Nina Pomerantz coming around the corner, arms folded across her chest, carrying files with her.

Nina (surprised):
Good morning, Dr. Ross!

Doug (grins, opens the door):
Good morning, Nina.

Nina (as they start in together):
You look like you had a rough night.

Doug (nods):
I did. And I need to talk to you today, sometime when you have time.

Nina:
I'll have to check my schedule, but, I'm sure I can work you in. Something serious?

Doug (as they reach the elevator...punches button):
I don't know.
(raises an eyebrow at her)
Maybe.

Nina:
I'll let you know as soon as I can see you.

They get into the elevator together and Doug punches another button. The car closes and they disappear.

Cut to the second floor. Show Doug coming into the center and Mark is already there, eating a bagel, and sorting mail.

Mark:
Hey, Doug!

Doug (stops, starts looking through the mail):
How are you this morning, Mark?

Mark:
Can't complain...Carol didn't come with you?

Doug:
I took the El...she took the car to take the kids to school. She'll be here in a few minutes.

Mark:
Everything OK last night?

Doug;
Everything was fine...

Mark:
There was a message on the answering machine something about a piano?

Doug (chuckles):
Yeah...Tatchie is going to start taking lessons...the Grandmother's got together on this one and they're going to help pay for the thing, so, I figured why not?

Mark:
What about Tatiana? Does she WANT to learn to play?

Doug (nods):
Oh yeah. She thinks it'll be fun.
(picks up his mail and starts for his office)
You know where I can buy some good ear plugs?

Mark chuckles as Doug disappears into the office.

Cut to show Carol arriving for work in a rush.

Carol:
Morning, Mark...sorry I'm late!

Mark:
You're right on time...don't worry about it.

Carol (looks around):
Doug here yet?

Mark (motions over his shoulder):
He's in his office.

Carol:
Did he say anything to you?

Mark:
He told me that Tatiana is going to learn to play the piano.

Carol (rolls her eyes):
This ought to be fun! But, she's really excited about it...

Mark:
There was a message on the machine about a piano. I imagine that's what he's taking care of back there...

Carol:
Something's bugging him, Mark. He's really uptight.

Mark (nods):
Yeah, I kind of got that idea from him last night.

Carol:
He's having bad dreams and he says he can't remember them, but, I'm not sure I believe him. If he talks to you, will you please let me know? I'm really worried about him right now but I know better than to crowd him.

Mark:
Sure, but, he's not talking to me, either!

Carol:
Yeah, but, he might. Just keep me posted.

Carol goes on off to start working. Mark is about to clear the counter when Greg Powell comes in, also rushing.

Greg (sheepishly):
Am I late?

Mark (shakes his head):
Nope! Not yet!

Greg goes on past Mark, who looks up at the clock and starts getting things ready for patients.

Cut to show time lapse. The center is in full swing with patients sitting in waiting areas and bustling about the floor. Cut to show Doug with a young patient on an exam table. He is a boy, about 10 years old. There is an adult with him beside the table...a woman...who looks to be his grandmother. The boy is holding his arms against his stomach and giving Doug a suspicious look.

Doug (cheerfully, looking at chart):
So, you are Raoul?
(the boys doesn't answer...the woman makes an exasperated face)

Woman:
Yes, Doctor...this is Raoul.

Doug (smiles at her):
What seems to be the problem, Mrs...?

Woman:
Fernandez...he is my son's boy.

Doug:
OK, Mrs. Fernandez...what seems to be the problem here?

Woman:
It is his stomach...he's having much pain.

Doug:
Got a stomach ache, pal? Can I see?

Doug starts to put his hands on the boy's stomach, but, the boy tenses up and leans away from him.

Doug:
I have to look at you, Bud...come on...I promise it won't hurt...I'm just gonna feel you.
(boy gives him a cautious look)
How about if we lay you down first, OK?

Doug takes the boy by the shoulders to push him into a prone position on the table. As he does, he notices blood on the sheet where the boy was sitting.

Doug (pushes gently on the boy's stomach):
Does this hurt?
(the boy nods his head quickly, Doug moves his hands and pushes again)
What about this?
(again, the boy nods his head)
OK...
(turns to Grandmother)
Does he speak English?

Woman:
Yes, he does, but he doesn't talk much.

Doug (reaches over and punches an intercom button):
I need a nurse or an assistant back here in three...please.

Woman:
Is something wrong, Doctor?

Doug:
I don't know yet...but I need a helper back here anyway.
(turns back to the boy)
Raoul...Buddy...how long have you had this pain?

Woman:
He started complaining of it early this morning, right after he got out of bed.

Doug:
So, you don't know if it started last night or not?
(woman shakes her head, Greg comes into the room)
Mrs. Fernandez, could you just step out into the hall, please? I need to examine Raoul...

Woman (insistingly):
I'd rather stay.

Doug (smiles at her):
I'd rather you didn't. It'll only take a few minutes. Please?

The woman gives him a suspicious look as he directs her out into the hallway. He closes the door on his way back and goes over to the table with his patient.

Doug:
Raoul...I'm going to ask you something and I want you to tell me the truth, OK? You have trouble sitting down right now?
(boy nods slowly at him)
And you're hurting up inside?
(boy nods slowly again)
OK, Buddy...we'll take care of it.
(looks at Greg)
Help him get undressed and get him into a gown.

Greg nods and reaches for the boys' shirt but, the boy pulls back and reacts fearfully.

Doug (soothingly):
It's OK, Raoul...he won't hurt you...

The boy continues to resist, but, Greg is able to get him into a gown and settled back on the table. Doug leans over him and gives him a comforting look.

Doug (touches the boys' shoulder):
Can you roll over on your side for me, Buddy?

Giving Doug suspicious look over his shoulder, the boy rolls over on one side. Doug pulls a sheet up over his knees and peers under it. We don't see what he sees, but we see his expression change to a sick look. He puts the sheet down and pats the boy on the back gently.

Doug (to Greg):
I'll be right back.

Doug goes directly out of the room and down to where Mark is working in his office.

Doug (nervously):
I need your help.

Mark (looks up):
Sure! What's wrong?

Doug:
I got a 10 year old kid down in three...he's been sexually molested...I don't know if I can do this or not, Mark. I need your help.

Mark:
You're sure?

Doug:
He's bleeding from the rectum...what would you say? You treated that once that I know of...

Mark (nods sadly):
OK...you want me to treat him?

Doug:
I want you to help me. Greg is back there now but I'd rather have you...

Mark (gets up to go with him):
OK...

Cut to show Doug and Mark going back into the exam room. The boy is still on his side and Doug lifts the sheet for Mark to see. Mark winces and shakes his head slowly.

Doug (softly):
Raoul...buddy...this is Dr. Greene. He's going to help me out with this, OK?
(Looks up at Greg)
You stay, too. It may take both of us to hold onto him.

Greg and Doug hold onto the boys' arms securely while Mark takes a probe off the tray behind him. Stay focused on Doug's face as the exam begins. He is anguished and looks away as Raoul begin to fight their hold and scream in pain. Stay focused on Doug as his face registers the pain he is feeling for his patient as well as remembering his own experience in the past. It takes both Greg and Doug to hold the boy on the table as Mark continues the exam. As soon as Mark returns the probe to the table, Doug releases his hold on the boy and darts quickly out of the room.

Mark (to Greg):
Stay here with him...I'll be right back.

Mark goes out into the hallway to find Doug but he doesn't see him. He walks down the hall looking and stops outside the Men's room. He can hear the sounds of someone vomiting inside so he pushes open the door to find Doug on his knees over the toiler, clutching the bowl with both hands.

Mark (softly):
You OK?

Doug (agitated):
Be serious, Mark...do I LOOK like I'm OK?

Mark stoops down to be beside him, reaching up to the sink and running cold water on a paper towel. He hands the wet towel to Doug, and he rubs it on his face, trying to recover himself.

Carol (head in the doorway):
What's going on?

Mark:
Doug's not feeling very well. It's OK, Carol. I got it.

Carol nods and goes back out of the doorway. Mark turns quietly to Doug. Doug has stopped vomiting now and slowly gets to his feet.

Mark:
Why don't you take a break? Go back to your office and rest for a while?

Doug (nods):
Yeah...that sounds like a good idea. Can you wrap things up?

Mark:
I'll take care of it. You want to call Child Services? Or do you want me to?

Doug:
I'll call them...Beverly knows me.

Mark:
OK...I'll keep everybody here until she gets here.

They go out of the men's room and Mark goes back to the patient while Doug heads for his office.

Cut to show Mark applying medicine to Raoul's wounded area while Greg holds onto the boy. The patient is groaning and twisting, but, no longer screaming or crying.

Greg (quietly):
What happened to Dr. Ross?

Mark:
He's not feeling very well. I told him to take a break.

Mark finishes up with Doug's patient and steps into the hall to tell the Grandmother to wait until he comes for her. He wants Raoul to rest a while. Show Greg watching on with a confused and curious expression.

Cut to Doug's office. Show he is on the phone, and show only his side of the conversation.

Doug:
Beverly, yeah, it's Doug Ross. I've got one for you. Kid has been sexually abused but I don't know by who.

Doug is under stress...he runs his hand through his hair and looks with anguish around the office.

Doug (continued):
Yeah...I didn't really get to talk to him much and he's pretty closed up anyway. His name? Raoul Fernandez. What do you mean that's a problem?

Focus on Doug's perplexed expression. He sighs deeply and pinches the bridge of his nose and closes his eyes as he listens to the explanation from his question.

Focus on Doug's pained expression and Fade Act Two to Black.

Act Three

Scene opens at the center in Doug's office. He is there with Beverly Watters, a Child Service Social Worker. She is sitting on the edge of his desk and he is pacing in front of her.

Doug:
What did you mean when you said there was a problem with Raoul?

Beverly (sighs):
We have investigated abuse with Raoul Fernandez five times before this call. He's been removed from the house twice. This is third time...this time it's for a year.

Doug:
So, where will you put him? In a home somewhere?

Beverly:
Well, we'll have to until we can find a foster home for him...which I don't think is going to be easy.

Doug (confused):
Why not?

Beverly:
Well, for starters, we're a little short on foster parents right now. And Raoul is what we term as 'hard to place' anyway.

Doug (growing annoyed):
He's a ten year old kid...why would he be 'hard to place'?

Beverly:
Because Raoul is a very disturbed little boy. He doesn't talk much. The only real emotion he has is anger. He doesn't know how to control his anger and that creates a lot of problems in foster homes.

Doug:
So, you just lock him up in a home and forget about him? Like the system did to Tatiana?

Beverly (shrugs):
There's not a whole lot else we can do, Doug. If no one will take him, what choice do we have?

Doug:
I'm a doctor and I have to see this kind of stuff every day...but, I'm also a father and I know that kids can change.

Beverly:
But they have to have people to help them change.

Doug:
Kids respond to love and attention...

Beverly:
When they get it in the proper perspective, yes! I agree with you, Doug! But, there's nothing else I can do in this case.

Doug:
I hate to see that kid pushed aside. He really needs professional help...this kid has a lot of problems, Beverly!

Beverly (nods):
I agree with you. I've been working this case for almost four years...

Doug (alarmed):
This has been going on for four years?

Beverly:
In one form or another.

Doug (runs his hand through his hair):
There has to be something we can do. Is there anyway I could take him?

Beverly (scoffs):
Haven't you got enough, Doug? A pre-teen and an HIV eight year old along with a less than six month old baby? Even if I thought it was a good idea, it would take months for all the paper work to go through.
(Doug sighs with a dejected look)
I'll tell you what might work, though. Are you still involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program?

Doug:
I signed up for it, but, they never matched me with anybody. I think I got lost in the shuffle.

Beverly:
That's another thing that sometimes takes time. What about if I put Raoul into that program, and suggest he be matched with you. He wouldn't be living with you, but, you would get to spend some time with him.

Doug:
Where would he be living? At the home?

Beverly:
Well, I do know one couple that might take him. And the mother is a registered child psychologist.

Doug:
I get the feeling there's a 'but' attached here someplace.

Beverly:
No, no 'but'. I think she could handle Raoul.

Doug:
How soon will you know about this?

Beverly:
I'll go back to office and call her today. Raoul could be with them as early as tonight.

Doug (nods):
OK...let me talk to him before you take him, OK? And please call me about this and let me know what's going on.

Beverly (nods):
Absolutely. You have my word.

Doug (heads for the door):
OK...let me talk to him.

Beverly:
I'll wait right here.

Doug goes out of the office and into the exam room where Raoul is still lying on the table. Greg is still there with him, sitting nearby.

Doug (quietly):
Thank you, Greg, for staying with him. You can go now.

Greg nods and go quietly out of the room. Raoul sits up on the table and Doug goes over and pulls up a stool to sit eye to eye with the boy. The boy gives him a careful and suspicious look.

Doug (grins):
Hey, Buddy. How are you feeling? Any better?
(Raoul nods a little)
I talked to somebody who knows you and she says this sort of thing has been going on for a long time. Is that true?
(Again, Raoul nods a little)
Can you tell me who's hurting you, Raoul? Can you talk to me at all?
(The boys stares him in the eye, but says nothing)
Is it your Daddy?
(Raoul doesn't respond)
Is it a friend of your Mom's?
(again, Raoul does not respond. Doug smiles at him)
OK, Buddy. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. But, my friend is going to take you with her today and see if she can find someplace else for you to live for a while.
(the boy drops his head sadly...Doug lifts his chin with his fingers)
It's going to be OK. I promise. We're going to see if we can work things out so that I can spend some time with you, too. Would that be OK with you?
(Raoul looks at him, tears forming in his eyes)
I've got a little boy, too. He's a little bit older than you are, but, I think you two might get along OK after a while.
(he pats Raoul on the knee gently)
We all want to help you, Buddy. That's all any of us want. So, now...will you come with me?

He stands up and reaches his hand to the boy. Raoul looks carefully up at him. Doug does not coax, just stands in front of him with his hand out-stretched to him. Slowly, and very fearfully, Raoul begins to reach his hand toward Doug. Finally, he slips his hand into Doug's and looks him straight in the eye. Doug smiles down at him and the boy makes one small gesture of a half smile as he slides off the table and goes out of the room with Doug.

Cut to show Doug coming into his office with Raoul, hands on the boys' shoulders, to stop just inside the door and look at Beverly.

Beverly:
Are we all ready to go?

Doug (nods):
I think we are.

Beverly reaches her hand to Raoul and the boy gives it to her almost readily. Doug walks behind them as they start down the hallway. Show Raoul looking over his shoulder at Doug and almost smiling at him. As they get to the elevator, Raoul's grandmother comes rushing over.

Woman:
You can't take him away...please let me take him home!

Beverly (sternly):
I'm sorry, Mrs. Fernandez. I told the family the last time that one more violation and it would be a long time before you got him back.

Woman (turns harshly to Doug):
This is all your fault! You're supposed to be a doctor! Not a snitch!

Doug (calmly):
Mrs. Fernandez, it is part of my job to report any suspected abuse that I treat.

Woman (as she heads for the stairs):
I will see you in hell, Dr. Ross!

Doug (softly, as she leaves):
I've already been there, Lady.

Beverly (from the elevator car):
I'll call you.

Doug (nods):
I'll be waiting.

Doug waits until the elevator door closes them off. Raoul never takes his eyes off Doug. Just as the door closes, Doug waves shortly to him.

Just as Doug starts to walk away, Vickie, the receptionist, holds the phone out to him.

Vickie:
Phone for you, Dr. Ross...it's Dr. Pomerantz.

Doug (nods):
I'll take it in my office, Vickie...thank you.
(Doug goes quickly down the hall to his office and punches a button on the buzzing phone) c Nina! Thank God! When can you see me?

Nina (over intercom):
Are you having a bad day, Doug?

Doug (running his hand through his hair):
Yes!

Nina:
I have time to see you now...can you come?

Doug:
I'll be there in two minutes!

He punches the button and starts out the door. He passes Mark in the hallway and stops briefly.

Doug:
Mark...can you cover for me? I have an appointment I have to keep.

Mark (nods):
Sure...go ahead.

Doug (touches Mark's shoulder as he goes by):
Thanks, Mark...I really appreciate it today.

Doug goes quickly on down the hall and goes out the door. Carol comes up beside Mark, watching him go.

Carol:
What's going on?

Mark:
He has an appointment.

Carol:
With Nina?

Mark:
That's my guess. He didn't say. And I didn't ask.

Carol:
What happened this morning?

Mark:
The little boy that just went out of here?
(Carol nods)
Was sexually abused.

Carol (gasping expression):
Oh, God. Is that what made him sick?

Mark:
I think all of it was just a little too close to home for him.

Carol:
You never really knew everything about that night, did you?

Mark (sighs):
I wasn't sure I ever wanted to.

Carol:
I have a tape at home that Nina gave to me where he talks about it. If you ever do think you want to know, I'd let you hear it.
(pause)
I don't know if Doug is ever going to get over that.

Mark:
I don't think you ever do.

Carol (raises an eyebrow at him):
I guess you'd know, wouldn't you?

Mark:
Yeah, but, it was nothing like what Doug went through. I don't know how he's done as well as he's done when I think about it sometimes.

Carol:
Doug's a very strong person.

Mark (smiles at her):
And he has very strong support.

Mark goes on off and Carol just smiles at his remark. Then she turns to go back to work herself.

Cut to show Doug curled in a chair in Nina's office. He is nervous and fidgeting, picking at a shoe string and shifting in the chair. Nina comes around the desk to sit in the chair next to him and be close to him.

Nina:
OK...are you all right?

Doug:
No...no I'm far from all right! I'm about two inches off the ground and I'm ready to crash.

Nina (touches his hand):
All right...OK...now we're not going to let that happen, that's why you're here. Start where ever you want to start and tell me what's going on.

Doug:
I saw a face in my dreams.

Nina:
OK...start at the beginning with this and tell me about this face.

Doug:
I keep seeing pieces of the attack in my dreams. And I finally saw the face of my attacker.

Nina:
OK...can you identify that man now if you saw him?

Doug:
That's just it, Nina! The face I saw is impossible to be my attacker! It's a face out of my past...
(careful pause...looks at his feet)
...and the man is dead.
(peers up at her fearfully)
What's happening to me, Nina?

Focus on Nina's concerned expression and Fade Act Three to Black.

Act Four

Scene opens still in Nina's office. Nina is still sitting close to Doug and he is still shifting around in the chair.

Nina:
Are you sure this man is dead? There's no possibility of a mistake?

Doug:
I went to his funeral when I was eight years old.

Nina:
So, this is someone out of your childhood, then.
(Doug nods shortly)
Can you tell me about it?

Doug (shrugs, picks at his shoe):
I don't know! I don't know why I saw this man in my dream! It doesn't make any sense to me, Nina!
(gives her a desperate look)
Am I cracking up?

Nina (smiles):
No, Doug...you're going to be fine. You're just having a hard time remembering something. Will you let me put you under hypnosis?

Doug:
Do you think there's no other answer?

Nina:
In this particular incident, I don't really think so. If you can't remember, we have to try something else.

Doug:
I'll agree to do it if you get Carol to come down here. Whatever happened, I want her to know it. Can you do that?

Nina (nods):
I'll call her right now.

She gets up and goes over to her desk, buzzing the intercom. Doug stays in the chair, but, he is very nervous and can't sit still.

Nina (on intercom):
Carol, this is Nina, can you come down here, please?

She snaps off the intercom and smiles sadly at Doug. He gives her a helpless look with his eyes.

Cut to show Carol coming quietly in the door. Nina smiles at her when she comes in and Doug looks around quickly, reaching his hand out to her. She walks over and takes hold of his hand, sliding into the chair beside him.

Carol (fearfully):
What's going on?

Doug:
I'm cracking up...

Nina:
He's seeing a vision in his dreams about the attack of a face from his past but he can't make any sense out of it. I want to put him under hypnosis and he wanted you to be here when I did that.

Doug (looks over at Carol):
I'm scared, Carol. I've never been so scared in my whole life!

Carol (holds his hand):
It's OK, Doug. We're going to get to the bottom of this and then maybe everything will be all right.

Nina (walks across the room):
Come on over here, Doug, and lie down.

Doug (going to her):
Are you gonna swing a watch in front of my face?

Nina (chuckles):
You've been watching too many movies, Doug. I do it with lights.
(she takes a small flashlight and cuts the room lights as Doug eases onto the couch)
I want you to just relax, OK?
(Doug nods, nervously)
Just watch the lights.
(Nina turns on the beam and works them slowly back and forth between each of Doug's eyes. He follows the lights with his eyes and a nervous, scared look in them)
You're going to take a journey back in time...back to your childhood...can you see anything from your childhood yet, Doug?

Doug (still watching the lights...his voice is very robotic):
I see the house Ohio...

Nina:
Who lives in that house?

Doug:
My Mom...and my Dad...and me...and Uncle Don.

Nina:
Why does Uncle Don live there?

Doug:
He's not really an uncle...that's just what I call him...he's a friend of my Dad's. He lives there because he doesn't have anyplace else to live.

Nina:
Why not?

Doug (quietly):
He's a drunk. And nobody else will have him.

Nina:
How old are you, Doug?

Doug:
I'm six years old.

Pan back to show Carol looking on with all of this. Her face shows concern and pain as she sits in the chair across the room.

Cut back to Nina and Doug.

Nina:
Something happened to you, Doug, when you were six years old. Do you know what it was?

Doug:
My Dad left, like he always did, and he left Uncle Don to stay with us.

Nina:
OK...can you tell me more?

Doug:
It was OK most of the time. But, one night, my Mom had to be gone...I don't remember where she went...and she asked Uncle Don to stay with me.
(Nina does not interrupt him and just lets him talk. Doug keeps his eyes straight ahead and does not focus on anyone as he speaks very slowly)
He had been drinking most of the say and he was in a real bad mood that night. I was playing on the floor with my truck and I bumped the table and spilled his beer. He went berserk.

Nina:
Tell me what happened, Doug...don't leave anything out.

Doug (choking on tears forming in his throat):
He grabbed me up off the floor and shook me really hard, screaming at me that I was stupid. Then he shoved me down across the chair and held his hand in the middle of my back...

Nina:
Did he hit you, Doug?

Doug:
He took off his belt and started hitting me with it.

Cut to show Carol put her hand over her mouth and tears well up in her eyes.

Cut back to Doug and Nina.

Nina:
It's all right, Doug...can you continue?

Doug:
Yes.

Nina:
Tell me what happened next.

Doug:
He put me in my room after the whipping was over.

Nina:
Did anything happen after that?

Doug:
Sometime later, he came into my room. I had been crying. He came over and sat down on my bed and he seemed really nice to me. He asked me if I was still hurting and I told him I was so he told me he could make it feel better. He picked me up and put me across his lap and started rubbing my bottom...

Cut to show Carol with her hand still over her mouth but the tears are slipping down her cheeks now.

Cut back to Doug, still staring straight ahead and still speaking in a robotic tone.

Nina:
Do you remember what happened then?

Doug:
He took my pajama bottoms off me and started rubbing me harder.

Nina:
Did anything else happen?

Doug:
He laid me down on the bed and told me I was a bad boy...

Nina:
Why did he tell you that? Because you spilled his beer?

Doug:
I don't know...I guess.

Nina:
What happened then?

Doug:
I was on my bed on my stomach and he told me he would show me what bad boys get and he laid down over top of me...

Cut to show Carol put both hands over her face and muffle her sobs.

Cut back to Doug and Nina.

Doug (continuing):
I remember this burning sensation going up inside me...and a feeling that I was going to be split apart. I started screaming and he put his hand over my mouth. It seemed like it lasted forever. But, he finally picked me up and put me on his lap and started holding me. He told me I couldn't ever tell my Mom or my Dad...that if I did, they would be mad at me and I would get a spanking. When he left the room, I was so scared, I got into the closet and wouldn't come out until my Mom came home.

Nina:
So, you never told anybody?

Doug:
No.

Nina:
Did this incident ever happen again?

Doug:
No...Uncle Don moved out real soon after that and I didn't see him again...

Nina:
Until the funeral?

Doug:
Right.

Nina:
Once he was dead, why didn't you tell somebody?

Doug:
I don't know. I think I tried to forget about it.

Nina:
OK, Doug, I want you to leave your childhood and come back to the present...

She reaches over and turns on the lights in the room. When the lights get bright, Doug's trance pops and he blinks his eyes quickly.

Nina:
Do you remember anything you told me?
(Doug gives her a blank look)
I have to know, Doug, if you know what you told me?
(Doug nods slowly)

Doug:
But it doesn't explain why I saw his face as my attacker in my dream.

Nina (sighs):
Yes, I'm afraid it does. It means the attacker is someone you know.

Doug (winces):
It does?
(Nina nods)
But, I don't know who it is. I don't even remember if I saw his face.

Nina:
We'll just have to work on it, Doug. It's all going to take time.

Doug (gives her a painful look):
Will I ever get over this, Nina? Am I going to carry this with me for the rest of my life?

Nina:
I'm going to do everything I can to help you, Doug. But, it's going to take time. And you're just going to have to work with me as much as you can.

Doug:
You know I will.

Nina (walks over to her desk):
I want us to see each other three times a week again, like we did before. Will you be able to do that? Will you have time?

Doug (sits up on the couch now):
I'll make time.

Nina (compassionate tone):
Will you be all right this evening?

Doug (looks over at Carol and smiles. She smiles back at him):
I'll be fine. I'll be home with my family and there's no place I'd rather be.

Nina:
Then, I'll let you go...and if you need me for anything, please don't hesitate to page me, OK?

Doug (stands up and reaches for Carol's hand):
Thanks, Nina...
(Carol goes over to him and puts her hand in his. He looks down at her and wipes a tear off her cheek with his finger and chuckles)
Are you OK?

Carol:
No, I'm not OK. My heart is hurting for a little boy I can't comfort.

Doug (kisses her forehead):
That little boy is OK, now...he finally told somebody his secret. Come on...let's go home.

He starts out with Carol and they give a short wave to Mark to let him know they are leaving. Mark nods with a concerned look but waves back to them. Carol pushes the elevator button and they step into the car. Just as the door starts to close, Doug sees a flash of light. When he looks down the hallway, he sees a little boy stepping out from behind a door and smiling at him. Doug smiles, then wraps his arms around Carol as the door closes them off and fades Act Four to Black.

Closing Act

Scene opens at the Ross home. Show Carol opening the door to let Mark come in with a smile.

Carol:
Hi, Mark! Glad you could make it!

Mark:
Well, I've never been to a piano party before!

Carol:
Sarah's bringing her home right now...she doesn't know she got it yet.

Mark:
How's Doug?

Carol:
I think he's OK. He's been pretty quiet, but, I really think he's OK.

Mark (nods, hangs up his jacket):
Good...that's good.

Doug (coming into the hallway suddenly):
Hey, Mark! Did you come to see Tatchie get her piano?

Mark (nods):
Yeah! Carol invited me!

Doug:
That's OK...that's great that you came. You don't ever have to be invited, Mark...you know that.

Carol (looking out the window):
Here comes Sarah with Tatchie...everybody be cool!

Mark and Doug pick up cards, Carol picks up a book, and Scott is playing a video game when Helen and Sarah come in the front door with Tatiana.

Doug (brightly):
Hi, Punkin! Did you have fun?

Tatiana (rolls her eyes):
I ate until I popped!

Doug (laughs...pokes her in the belly):
You don't look like you popped to me!

Tatiana (giggling wildly):
Stop it, Papa! You'll make me throw up.

Doug looks up at the Grandmothers to give them their cue.

Sarah:
Tatiana, didn't you tell me you got a new snow globe?

Tatiana:
Yeah! Dr. Mark gave it to me!

Sarah:
Well, could I see it, please?

Tatiana:
OK...but Mama says I can't take it down, you'll have to go where it is.

Sarah and Helen follow, as well as Doug, Carol, and Scott, and Mark as Tatiana leads them through the dining room and into the family room. Focus on her eyes wide with excitement as she sees a spinet piano against the wall.

Helen (leans down to Tatiana):
You start your lesson this Saturday, Sweetheart.

Tatiana (VERY excited):
Is it for me?

Carol (laughs):
Well, I don't know who else you think it would be for in this house...I surely can't play it.

Helen (gives Carol a sarcastic look):
We're well aware of that, Dear.

Sarah (looks coyly at Doug):
Oh, well, I know somebody that can play it.
(Doug ducks his head sheepishly)

Carol (surprised):
You play?

Sarah (answer for him):
Yes, he does...and beautifully, I might add.

Tatiana:
Oh, Please, Papa! Play something!

Doug (embarrassed):
I haven't played in years...I'm sure I don't remember anything...

Sarah (sits him down on the bench):
Oh, come on, Doug...give it the old Ross 'try'!

Doug puts his hands on the keyboard and plays a couple of test notes. Then, he lays his hands down and begins to play a piece from memory while everybody looks on surprised. He stops the piece after a minute or two with a shrug.

Doug (sheepishly):
And that's about all I remember of it!

Carol (surprised):
That was really GOOD, Doug! I had no idea...

Tatiana (beaming at him):
I hope I can play like you someday, Papa.

Doug:
I hope you play better than me and not too long from now, either!

Everybody crowds around the piano and Tatiana sits down at the bench to try it out. Doug backs slowly out of the room and goes out to the porch, leaning on the rail, and looking at the moon. Cut to show Mark coming out onto the porch with him.

Mark:
You OK?

Doug (nods):
Yeah...I'm OK.

Mark:
Is there anything I can do?

Doug (shakes his head, looks down):
No, I don't think so. Thanks, though.

Mark:
I know you had a rough day. I don't know much about it, but, Nina told me you had a rough session.

Doug:
I don't know if I'm ever going to get my life together, Mark. I'm really scared right now that I'm never going to put all the bad things behind me.

Mark (leans on the rail with him):
Sure you will. Nina is good at helping people cast out their demons. You know that. That's why you keep going back to her.

Doug (looks out over the front lawn):
I've got so many things to worry about now...the kids...and Carol's pregnant again...

Mark (surprised):
So soon?

Doug (nods):
Yeah. Happened in the Poconos on our honeymoon.
(chuckles)
I didn't want her pregnant again so soon, but nothing we can do about it now.

Mark:
And this is bothering you?

Doug:
I'm just afraid...if she has trouble this time, I don't know if I can take care of her, and the kids, and the house, and still take care of myself...

Mark:
Well, if you need help, you know where to find it.

Doug nods and chuckles. Cut to show Carol in the doorway.

Carol:
Doug? Beverly Watters is on the phone for you?

Doug:

Thanks, Hon. I'll be right there.
(turns to Mark quietly)
Thank, Mark...thanks for always being there...thanks for being my friend.

Without another word, he turns to go into the house and Mark follows him. Pull back to focus on the house and all it's lights and Fade into the closing credits of the show.
