Mark: You call him?
Carol softly shakes her head no.
Mark: Has he called you?
Carol: He leaves messages on my machine. I think [pause] he calls when I know I won't be there so that I won't have to talk to him if I don't want to.
Mark: You don't want to?
Carol: I don't know what else there is to say. Rain check on that ginger ale? [She gets up to go with tears in her eyes.]
Mark: Sure
Doug and Carol's song is softly playing in the background.
